Jerimy Cunningham (left) with his collaborator Lasseiny Kayentao and Kadjia Kwontou sitting in Kadjia's patio in Soa, Central Mali. He is interviewing Kadjia, who is a Somono potter (part of the ironworker or forgeron/numu caste), about the broader social and economic contexts of her ceramic production and marketing. Lasseiny is a local Bozo fisherman who has worked extensively with ethnoarchaeologists in the region and acted as a guide, translator and close friend during the project. (April 2002)
