Book Launch for recent publications from the Wenner-Gren International Symposium Series

There will be a wine reception launching the three books published in 2006 from the Wenner-Gren International Symposium Publication Series: "Roots of Human Sociality: Culture, Cognition and Interaction" edited by N. J. Enfield and Stephen C. Levinson, hot off the press in October 2006 followed by "Sensible Objects: Colonialism, Museums and Material Culture" edited by Elizabeth Edwards, Chris Gosden and Ruth B. Phillips and, finally, "World Anthropologies: Disciplinary Transformations in Systems of Power" edited by Gustavo Lins Ribeiro and Arturo Escobar (above right in the photograph, talking to Dr. Ricardo Santos, a member of the Wenner-Gren Advisory Council). The nature of human sociality – the primary bonds, the cooperation, the nature of social interaction and the cognition that lies behind it – is a topic now in the limelight in a large number of disciplines both within and outside anthropology. Spurred by a recent interdisciplinary Wenner-Gren symposium ("Roots of human sociality: culture, cognition, and interaction"), this panel brings different kinds of data and different kinds of viewpoints to bear on a broad anthropological understanding of human sociality, a subject which spans the four fields of anthropology. Participants: Leslie Aiello, Peter Richardson, Stephen Shennan, Elinor Ochs, Richard Shweder, Maurice Bloch, Michael Silverstein and John Lucy.
