Abstract

This workshop was the third in a series funded by the Foundation to further the work of the Council for the Preservation of Anthropological Records.  Members of CoPAR and representatives from the Smithsonian Institution came together at this meeting to assess the status of the National Anthropological Archives within the Smithsonian structure, specifically to identify current and potential institutional strengths and challenges that the NAA faces in its quest to preserve and make available its important holdings.  The workshop sought to identify possible courses of action with regard to preservation issues, educational awareness, resource needs, and opportunities that will insure a sound future for the organization.  Discussions focused on the institutional contexts and current missions of the NAA, and on development of a plan for an expanded archives. The organizers submitted a report to the Smithsonian administration presenting recommendations formulated at the conference.
