I obtained my PhD in 1995 at the University of Illinois and have an academic background in education and anthropology. My field research started off in the DR Congo, followed by research in Zimbabwe, United States, and South Africa. I hold associate positions at the University of Illinois, University of Alberta, and Stellenbosch University. I have written on the linguistic, social-historical, and material contexts of people with disabilities. Currently, I'm conducting research on the material conditions of people with leprosy in several countries.
